Arts and Crafts Bungalow

The first discussion about this new home included the homeowners bringing in multiple floor plans and pointing out details from each that they found interesting. They didn’t necessarily have the exact floor plan in mind but they did know exactly what they liked. After a number of preliminary ideas were discussed, the final floor plan was developed which lead to a house that they love and that costs, on average, $110 per month to operate. There were a lot of sustainable (green) options included that cost a little more on the front end but made the long term maintenance costs very low. The home includes 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, a great room on the main level and a very large family room/bar area in the basement. The homeowners finished a home theater in the basement that not only keeps them entertained but keeps the Kaufman gang coming back too.

Hickory Hills Spec Home

This home started as an idea growing in Devans head which he eventually turned into the reality of a spec home. It is a contemporary prairie style with significant design contributions from the Not So Big House philosophy which translates to less house size and more detail. The concept teaches that rooms should flow together easily but still be defined as separate spaces; the rooms should be able to be used for more than one purpose and have more detail and personality than size. Some of the finish details include bamboo floors, different wood varieties for trim and custom built-ins, concrete countertops, whole house A/V wiring and much more. The basement of this home was originally left unfinished but the homeowner had us come back to finish that space as well (pictures included in another picture gallery)

Homeowner Designed New Home

These homeowners had a very specific design in mind and knew exactly what they wanted for finishes - the lot was completely wooded and taking advantage of that detail was foremost in their minds. This home includes many sustainable (green) options as many Kaufman built homes do. Some of those options include ICF foundation, geothermal heating/cooling system, foam insulation and more. Every floor in this home is heated whether carpet, wood or tile and there is a lot of custom trim details throughout.

Lake Home

Kaufman Construction had completed a previous remodel project for these clients. They were so happy with the work that Kaufman Construction had done for them in their current home that when they purchased a lot on a lake to build a second home, they contacted Kaufman Construction to build the new home. It was early fall and they wanted to be able enjoy the home the following summer, so Kaufman Construction went to work quickly and completed the home over the winter. The clients were able to enjoy their new summer "cottage" the following summer.

Traditional Look - State of the Art Function

Although these homeowners were very happy in their current home, a career change required that they relocate to a different county - their request was to essentially recreate their existing home in a different location. The first step was measuring and documenting the current home (including existing fixtures and finishes). The second was to make several minor changes to the floor plan based on the homeowners experience living in the home. Once the design changes were made, the selection process was completed which lead to the fixed final price.

Throughout the design process Kaufman Construction suggested that the clients consider several energy efficient improvements including ICF foundation, spray foam insulation, geo thermal HVAC, etc. With the help of a local energy rating company, these options were narrowed down to the most cost effective selections for this particular home and client’s budget. The final selections included ICF foundation, multi-stage gas HVAC, spray foam insulation as well as several other "sustainable" features. The result is a very traditional appearance and a very efficient, sustainable home. The home scored 53 on the HERS rating index which is far superior to the rating of 100, which indicates a home that is built to the energy code, and a rating of 85, which is required for an Energy Star rating. For more information on HERS Ratings click here.
